As a first generation, Latina psychologist, Dr. Sylvia Herbozo is passionate about improving equity in higher education and health care. She has over 10 years of experience in mentoring psychology doctoral students, including first generation students and those from marginalized groups. Her mentees have been accepted into highly competitive predoctoral internships and postdoctoral fellowships. She also has mentored postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty in securing academic jobs. Her professional development services include workshops and individualized feedback which strive to demystify the internship, fellowship, and academic job application processes.


Dr. Herbozo also has expertise in obesity and eating disorders. A primary aim of her current research is to better understand and address racial and ethnic disparities in weight outcomes following bariatric surgery. She was awarded grant funding to investigate socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological correlates of weight regain in Latino bariatric surgery patients. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences.


Clinically, Dr. Herbozo provides psychological services for patients seeking bariatric surgery. Her clinical practice emphasizes culturally relevant and bilingual services for Spanish speaking patients.

Dr. Herbozo offers lectures and trainings on obesity, eating disorders, health inequities, and systemic inequities in academia. She has worked with universities, non-profit organizations, and digital health start up companies.
